Menswear going Underground?Sunday, May 08, 2011Aaron Reese
Thursday night my best friend and I attended the The Style Series Menswear Fashion show at the Underground. Drinks, good music, and semi-pleasing men's fashion was the main course for the evenings festivities.
If anything, the show proved how one dimensional Midwestern menswear can be. Some of the looks were inspiring and alluded to the classic east coast prep appeal that's predominant within the menswear community. Bow ties, fedoras, Sperry top-siders with rolled up khaki's all were the highlights of the evening, all proving to be appropriate looks for this summer. Most of these looks were sponsored by Haberdash, a men's boutique here in Chicago that's definitely worth checking out! Vested in the allure of quality men's clothing and amazing service Haberdash was definitely the forerunner in the MW show.
Others left a bad taste in my mouth -- dated cargo pants, madras button downs, ill-matched suit separates were a couple of faux paus taking main stage that evening (on and off the runway). I'm waiting for Chicago to catch up with the innovation factor that is infecting the entire MW community. One can't be continuously inspired by the traditional button down and denim combo.
But there's hope for the MW scene in Chicago. I actually met two rather stylish guys who both had an interesting view on mens fashion, not to mention one of the buyers for Haberdash. Check them out on their blog at Themidwestyle.com
The pics below should give you some insight to the show; and while you're at it, check out yours truly in the leopard printed loafers.
