For Years & Years: My Newest Obsession

Wednesday, July 15, 2015Aaron Reese

Admittedly, it doesn't take much for me to obsess over things. (Don't get me started on Teen Wolf) But it's every blue moon that I find an artist/band that I'm really into, since I have very fleeting taste in music. I stumbled upon British trio, Years & Years on my normal Spotify conquests to find new music. It's needless to say, I've followed them closely ever since.

Firstly. there's Olly Alexander, the adorable dream-weaver/lead vocalist. I can't put my finger on why I like him so damn much, other than the fact he makes you wants to hug the life out of him. While remaining humble, Olly is also open about his personal life, including being an out gay male and currently dating Neil Milan of Clean Bandit. S-W-O-O-N.

Years & Years are definitely of the synth-pop variety, but make no hesitation to shy away from brooding and grim tunes. (aka, my theme music) It's Lorde meets The Weekend meets Ms. Mr. A lot, I know, but by the galactic powers of the Phoenix Force is it a beautiful combination. Check out the creepy video for their single, Foundation below.

Their debut album, Communion is nothing short of a synth pop dream, but perhaps my favorite tune belted from the angelic lips of Olly (Okay...I'll stop) is the band's cover of the Haim single, Don't Save Me for BBC 1. It's SO good. Or maybe I'm biased, obsessed and have had my brains replaced by fangirl mush. Either way, you're here, so listen to it below.

Also, they're British!! What else could a boy dream of? Besides seeing any sort of footage for the new X-Men: Apocalypse movie. (Fear not, I have, and I definitely have thoughts.)

Here are some of my favorite highlights from the new album, Communion:
